		Simple memory chips Simple memory chips are used in applications requiring disposable cards with a small amount of memory with minimal security requirements.
		Secure memory chips Secure memory chips are used in applications like transport, payment, event passes, identity, border crossing and anti-counterfeiting.  They use cryptographic authentication between the reader and the chip to guard against chip copy, emulation, or data modification by unauthorized parties.

Contactless smart cards

Contactless or proximity smart cards are generating excitement with various new applications.  Contactless has historically been used in transport and access control.  Today, because of the desire for fast transactions and consumer convenience, contactless technology is being piloted in the retail payment and corporate access markets.  These cards use Radio Frequency (RF) to communicate with their applications.  Contactless cards bring with them all the benefits of regular smart cards, memory or microprocessor cards, plus numerous elements that appeal to card issuers and users.
