HSPD-12, a directive from the US
President mandating a common identification standard for all
federal government agency employees and contractors and, FIPS
201, a new standard released by the National Institute of
Standards and Technology (NIST) have changed the landscape in
the identity world.
HSPD-12 established deadlines for
adoption of the new identification mandate. As promptly as
possible, but in no case later than eight months after the
release of the standard, or by October 2005, executive
departments and agencies are required to use the standard for
identification issued to federal employees and contractors to be
used for both physical access to federally controlled facilities
and logical access to federally controlled information systems.
FIPS 201 is a new
government-wide reliable
Personal Identification Verification (PIV) for government
employees and contractors.

Implications for the
Identification World
FIPS 201 provides a framework
for local government and any corporation that requires secure
identification.
It provides a solid unified standard that can be adopted by local governments or by any
corporation that requires strong identification of its
employees.
SCB Solutions can help you to
define a system that will take advantage of this new standard
but will still keep in mind the size of your organization. |
